Artificial Intelligence is taking over. And the signs are everywhere, from Apple’s Siri to Amazon’s Alexa to Google’s assistant to IBM’s Watson (all are intelligent personal assistants for various devices that include self-driving cars), the signs are getting clearer.
Artificial intelligence, AI, is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines. It has become an essential part of the technology industry. The core problems of artificial intelligence include programming computers for certain traits such as: Knowledge, Reasoning, Problem Solving, Perception, Learning, Planning, Speech Recognition and Ability to Manipulate and Move Objects.
AI aims to create intelligent machines that work and react like humans.
Machines can act and react like humans only if they have abundant information relating to the world. Hence, connection to the internet or satellite will provide almost all needed information for such machine to be self-dependent.
Artificial intelligence must have access to objects, categories, properties and relations between all of them to implement knowledge engineering. Initiating common sense, reasoning and problem-solving power in machines is a difficult and tedious approach.
Machine learning is another core part of AI. Learning without any kind of supervision requires an ability to identify patterns in streams of inputs, whereas learning with adequate supervision involves classification and numerical regressions. Classification determines the category an object belongs to and regression deals with obtaining a set of numerical input or output examples, thereby discovering functions enabling the generation of suitable outputs from respective inputs. Mathematical analysis of machine learning algorithms and their performance is a well-defined branch of theoretical computer science often referred to as computational learning theory.
Machine perception deals with the capability to use sensory inputs to deduce the different aspects of the world, while computer vision is the power to analyze visual inputs with a few sub-problems such as facial, object and gesture recognition.
Robotics is also a major field related to AI. Robots require intelligence to handle tasks such as object manipulation and navigation, along with sub-problems of localization, motion planning and mapping.
Per FutureofLife, Artificial intelligence, today, is properly known as narrow AI (or weak AI), in that it is designed to perform a narrow or specific task (e.g. only facial recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car). However, the long-term goal of many researchers is to create general AI (AGI or strong AI). While narrow AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, AGI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.
With all the possibilities of AI, which include economics (eradicating war, disease and poverty) and law to technical topics such as verification, validity, security and controls (Car, Airplane, pacemaker, automated trading system or power grid controls), through super intelligence, AI could also be dangerous to the human race.
Some experts have expressed concerns about creating a super-intelligent, self-dependent machines that are more intelligent than humans. Some concluded that unless we (humans) learn to align the goals of the AI with ours before it becomes super-intelligent, they may find our goals to be threatening to theirs.
Because AI depends on information, an AI machine connected to the internet or satellite could develop itself by upgrading its knowledge. Such a system could potentially undergo recursive self-improvement, triggering an intelligence explosion leaving human intellect far behind.
AI programmed to do something devastating as in autonomous weapons of mass destruction could land in wrong hands and also designed to be extremely difficult to turn off.
Another dangerous situation that could arise is the priority of AI’s purposes, for example, if a super-intelligent system is tasked with an ambitious geoengineering project, it might wreak havoc with our ecosystem as a side effect, and view human attempts to stop it as a threat to be met.
As these examples illustrate, the concern about advanced AI isn’t malevolence but competence. A super-intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we have a problem.
Generally, most researchers agree that a super-intelligent AI is unlikely to exhibit human emotions like love or hate, and that there is no reason to expect AI to become intentionally benevolent or malevolent.
However, to be able to predict and prevent the tendency of AI causing problems, AI safety research is put in place e.g. OpenAI, a not-for-profit artificial intelligence (AI) research company created by Elon Musk whose aim is to develop artificial general intelligence in a way that is safe and beneficial to humanity and to counteract large corporations who may gain too much power by owning super-intelligence systems devoted to profits, as well as governments which may use AI to gain power and even oppress their citizenry.
Musk also co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology startup company, to integrate the human brain with artificial intelligence believing that “machines can’t outsmart us if we have everything the machines have plus everything we have. At least, that is if you assume that what we have is actually an advantage.”
Tech companies are in a race to own the first super-intelligent (strong or general) AI. Hopefully, the creation of such and its robots will only make life better with minimal threat to our existence.
